You’ve been playing quite a few shows lately – have there been any crazy mishaps, Spinal Tap moments, or band pranks? It was a bit different but I think it was cool too. Niko: It’s definitely a different scene, and I think with Simple Plan, Enter Shikari, and Machinae Supremacy… the audience wasn’t that into us compared to Enter Shikari’s audience or Simple Plan’s audience. I can see you guys going hand-in-hand with Simple Plan, because your styles fit together nicely, but what was it like at a Machinae Supremacy show, considering they’ve got their own SID-metal genre? Was the crowd into it or were they a bit confused? It’s also a huge opportunity to perform to a wider audience.

Niko: Those were really great – most recently Simple Plan, but also Enter Shikari in Helsinki. You’ve also done a couple of shows with Machinae Supremacy and Simple Plan – what were those experiences like? Niko: Yeah, both Wacken and the Sziget Festival in Hungary, we thought it was a taste of something that we’re aiming for. Joel: It was a dream come true for 10-year-old boys, being on the big stage with tons of people. What was it like being at Wacken? Had either of you ever been there before? I think it helped our career really much.

Niko: It feels really great, winning those competitions. You guys have already won the 2014 Wacken Metal Battle and YleX’s “Stage haltuun” – h ow does it all feel? To start with, congratulations on your very solid start in the music business. Even though they’ve only had a few short years behind them, these guys had plenty of great stories to share! After their recent tour opening for Simple Plan, we got a chance to speak with them at South Park -festivaali in Tampere to discuss their victories, their music, and the future. Ask any old Rock drummer to play rudiments and they give you a blank stare. The violent pop revolution has begun and leading the charge are Finland’s own Blind Channel! These energetic young guys from Oulu aren’t just sweeping the nation and wiping the floor with the competition in the local music contests, but they’ve conquered the Baltics as well. I recall the name Gene Krupa, but don't recall seing any movies of him until I did a recent search at youtube. I recall seeing Buddy Rich and his band at Disneyland in the Carnation center quite a few years ago, playing swing music which was popular at the time. I mentioned Sandy Nelson because he seemed to be the last of the popular drummer acts, marking the end of an era in music history (one that pre-dates when I started to listen to music myself). I recall seeing his name on the marque at some club a while back wondering if it was the same Sandy Nelson from the 1950's and 1960's, and apparently it was. Although he's about 70 years old now, he's still playing. I looked up Sandy Neslon on youtube, and was suprised to find a few hits. This reversed the string to pickup relationship, the base strings located over pickups meant for treble strings and vice versa, reversing whatever strategy Fender was implementing with the pickups. Jimi played a right handed Strat, but strung it for left handed play. like Jimi who favored Strats played through Marshalls.Ī bit off topic bit of trivia here. That is why, even though people who don't know much would like to diss jazz drumming, the jazz drummer is usually the most skilled. With jazz, you learn 4 way independence, discipline, and dynamics. Learning to play jazz is in my opinion the door to being the best. Here is an example of one of those drummers, maybe my favorite drummer? Martin Lopez who plays for the swedish metal band "Opeth". Jazz drumming skill into metal/rock/alternative etc, then you've got something. Often jazz drummers are held back by slow boring songs. I think jazz drummers are the best drummers, although I don't really like jazz that much. Just because someone can hit more drums per second doesn't make them better. There is technical skill, there is soul, there is creativity, etc. Then there are those who like to show off technical skills while butchering the song as a whole. There are those who play simple, and don't go too crazy, but make the song sound good. I think it is kind of a difficult question to ask who is the best.
